NATO Summer School in Munich: 12 Students from Atilim University Participated in Special Training for Young People

“NATO STO Summer School in Munich on Decision-Making for the Future” organized by the SAS-195 Technical Working Group of Italy, Germany, Türkiye and Croatia within the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO) System Analysis and Studies (SAS) Panel was held on 15-18 July 2024 at the Universität der Bundeswehr in Munich, Germany.
In the creation of the NATO Summer School, which aims to transfer knowledge about NATO organization, missions, military decision-making and scientific activities within NATO to young generations to university and graduate students, Dr. Altan Özkil, who is the Director of the Defense Technologies Application and Research Center of our university and also serves as the Turkish Representative of the NATO STO SAS Panel, has taken part in the creation of the NATO Summer School and will also be the Chairman of the Technical Working Group on the NATO Summer Schools to be held subsequently.
The main purpose of the NATO Summer School is to increase the presence of young generations in NATO's Science and Technology Organization (STO) activities, to inform young generations about the scientific activities within NATO, military decision-making processes, operational research, new technologies in defense and their effects, and strategic decision-making practices on warfighting applications used in decision-making processes at strategic and operational level.
“NATO STO Summer School in Munich on Decision-Making for the Future” Summer School was attended by 12 undergraduate and graduate students from Atılım University, mainly from different engineering disciplines. Faculty members and military personnel from the USA, Türkiye, Italy, Croatia, and Germany provided training on various topics such as the place of artificial intelligence in decision-making processes in military operations, leadership and decision-making, and the challenges of biometric data. A total of 25 students from different countries participated in the event, where wargames were played, students took part in wargames and improved their decision-making competencies.
At the NATO STO Summer School event, Dr. Altan Özkil, Director of the Defence Technologies Application and Research Center at Atılım University, delivered a training titled “Role of Operations Research and Wargaming in Military Decision Making and Decision Support”.
Dr. Altan Özkil will chair the SAS-197 Technical Working Group, which will be responsible for the organization of the NATO STO Summer Schools in 2025 and 2026. It has been decided that the next three summer schools will be organized in Turkey, possibly hosted by Atılım University, Italy and Croatia respectively. This activity is expected to increase the recognition of Atılım University in the international arena, especially within NATO, and create important opportunities for future collaborations and projects.
