The XVIIth International Coal Preparation Congress (ICPC) was held between October 1-6, 2013 at the Grand Cevahir Hotel and Congress Center in Istanbul under the patronage of Mr. Taner Yıldız, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. In the Congress, the Technical Program was run in two parallel plenary sessions and poster sessions. Furthermore, the recent advances and developments in coal preparation and quality improvement technologies were discussed. An exhibition titled ICPC 2013 EXPO, where equipment manufacturers, material and service suppliers from around the world was able to display their products and services, was also part of the Congress. The official language of the Congress was English, however oral presentations were simultaneously interpreted into Turkish.
The organization of International Coal Preparation Congress (ICPC), which has been organized every four years since 1950, is carried out by the International Organizing Committee (IOC) composed of 12 full members. Countries represented in the International Organizing Committee (IOC) are Australia, Canada, Germany, India, Poland, Russia, The People’s Republic of China (PRC), The Republic of South Africa, The United Kingdom, The United States of America, Turkey and Ukraine. Greece, Hungary, Slovakia and The Czech Republic are candidate countries. The XVIIth International Coal Preparation Congress was organized for the first time in Turkey since her accession to the IOC membership in 1998. Turkey’s IOC member Prof. Gülhan Özbayoğlu (PhD), Dean of Engineering Faculty will chair both the IOC and the XVIIth International Coal Preparation Congress. Prof. Ali İhsan Arol (PhD), Head of Department of Mining Engineering has acted as the technical secretary.
185 abstracts, 130 of which were deemed suitable for oral presentations, were sent from 26 different countries from all over the world to the XVIIth ICPC. A very rich programme encompassing sight-seeing tours to historical sites and tourist attractions in different parts of Istanbul and Turkey and technical tours to coal preparation facilities was also organized both for participants and their accompanying attendants.
