Course Objectives The aim of this course is to acquaint the students with sample works of multicultural British literature written in the 20th century. The meanings of colonialism and postcolonialism will be explored by examining the main themes of postcolonial literary studies. In the course, seven short stories by Salman Rushdie, V.S. Naipaul, Kazuo Ishiguro, Doris Lessing, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Naguib Mahfouz, a novella by V.S. Naipaul and a novel by Kazuo Ishiguro will be studied successively in detail. The overall aim of the course is to give students a solid grasp of the field of postcolonial literary studies in terms of its defining problems and themes.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • learn about colonialism and imperial expansion
  • develop an awareness of the outcomes of colonialism
  • acquire knowledge about the post-colonial period
  • become familiar with writers from different cultures
  • are able to compare different cultures and their literary products
