Course Objectives This course primarily aims to familiarize the students with selected American poems ranging from Walt Whitman to Sylvia Plath and covering the 19th and 20th centuries. Strengthening the students’ skill of poetry appreciation is a natural aim, too. By in-class discussions, it is aimed that students concentrate on the elements that make a poem have a generic uniqueness. A general background to the poets’ lives and the socio-historical conditions of the era the poems were produced in will also be the focus of each lecture.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • become knowledgable about generic qualities of poetry.
  • learn the American poetry of 19th and 20th century by examining the best known poems of these centuries.
Course Content Selected American literary works written between the late 18th to 20th century with a particular emphasis on the historical, social and political circumstances.
