Course Objectives In the scope of the cooperation with the lawyers and experts on strategic litigation and human rights advocacy, students will make a study about the human rights violations with the experts and/or lawyers, afterwards they will work on the application(s) which are chosen with the cooperation of instructors of the class, lawyers and from disadvantaged groups and they will prepare human rights advocacy strategies about the applications. Thus students will develop legal strategies which enable disadvantaged groups to access to justice.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Having knowledge on legislation analysis,
  • literature review,
  • creating human rights advocacy strategies,
  • strategic litigation reading and writing techniques and writing a draft
Course Content Choosing every semester one or more applications to the lawyers who are experts on strategic litigation whose data is concealed, researching the related literature and court decisions, examples of other states and creating strategie, developing these strategies as concrete human rights advocacy strategies, sharing these strategies with relevant institutions and organizations, publication of these strategies in the student journal.

Weekly Subjects and Releated Preparation Studies

1 Fundamental human rights and importance of human rights advocacy.
2 Strategic litigation, Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP) and methodology in human rights advocacy (litigation campaigns, lobbying etc.).
3 General review of international and national human rights mechanisms. Review and reading of the relevant regulations.
4 Good examples of strategic litigation processes and review of some sample litigations. Review and reading of the relevant regulations.
5 Determining the case for strategic litigation and reviewing some sample applications and decisions. Review and reading of the relevant regulations.
6 Review of the international regulations and decisions and judgments of European Court of Human Rights about the subject of the selected litigation. Research of the subjects distributed to the students.
7 Review of the national regulations and national human rights mechanisms about the subject of the selected litigation. Research of the subjects distributed to the students.
8 Mapping the process and strategies of the litigation. Working on the draft.
9 Preparation of the draft strategic litigation. Working on the draft.
10 Preparation of the draft strategic litigation. Working on the draft.
11 Preparation of the draft strategic litigation. Working on the draft.
12 Preparation of the draft strategic litigation. Working on the draft.
13 Preparation of the draft strategic litigation. Working on the draft.
14 Sharing the draft with organisations and institutions working on human rights advocacy and improving the draft with the lawyer who is also one of the instructors of the class. Working on the draft.
15 Reviewing the draft to publish it in the student journal.
16 General evaluation.
