Course Objectives This course focuses specifically on twentieth century political thought. It is based on the determination that the theoretical approach, which has become more and more mainstream in this century, is liberal theory, and therefore sets its framework as an analysis of the challenges/criticisms/alternatives/rejections of liberal mainstream theory. In accordance with this framework, this course is planned to firstly understand the basic concepts, principles and values of liberal theory and to understand the mainstreaming of liberal theory, and then to examine how different starting points the challenges to liberal theory have come from and how different results they have reached. Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Learns the background of current populism debates.
  • Learns different explanations about the reasons for the distancing from democracy and/or authoritarianism observed in many countries today.
  • Knows the theories of hegemony and counter-hegemony.
Course Content Liberalism; socialism; conservatism; Western Marxism; post-Marxism; fascism; totalitarianism; Islamic political thought.

9 To know the political history of both Turkey and the world in terms of periods, important turning points and actors, to comprehend the impact of the social-historical backgrounds of countries on current political and administrative issues. X
