Course Objectives The aim of this course is to gain knowledge and skills on the special education of children at risk in during childhood (0-6 years), recognize children with special needs in professional practice, and direct them to the necessary institutions.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • He/she searces statistics on basic concepts in special education: child in need of special education; number of children with special needs.
  • He/she defines "special education", "history", and "barrier" terms.
  • He/she explains the attitudes towards the disabled and their reasons.
  • He/she discusses about the special education system in Turkey.
  • He/she explains what an individualized education program is and how it is done.
  • He/she explains diagnostic methods and processes.
Course Content Definition of special needs, terms related to special needs, history of special education in the world and in Turkey, opinions about special education, principles of special education, administrative regulations, classification in special education, causes of disability, prevalence of children with special needs, prevention and treatment inclusion, the place of people with disabilities in society; approach, assessment, support and orientation to special needs groups and families.
