Course Objectives | This course primarily aims to familiarize the students with selected American poems ranging from Walt Whitman to Sylvia Plath and covering the 19th and 20th centuries. Strengthening the students’ skill of poetry appreciation is a natural aim, too. By in-class discussions, it is aimed that students concentrate on the elements that make a poem have a generic uniqueness. A general background to the poets’ lives and the socio-historical conditions of the era the poems were produced in will also be the focus of each lecture. |
