Course Objectives | The course aims at understanding the concept of the modern state and the ways in which it is theorized in contemporary legal and political settings. The course, thus, focuses on first the historical development of the modern state in the West (esp. Western Europe); second on the emergence of the concept of sovereignty, the nation (-state), hence different political doctrines as historical development of the modern state begins to be realized on a global scale. |

Course Content | Historical stages in the development of the modern state (i.e. feudalism, policy of estates, absolutism and constitutional liberal state, the emergence of the system of states), sovereignty and nationalism, liberalism, conservatism, socialism, development of the modern state in Turkey. |
