Course Objectives This course primarily examines the origins, historical development, functions, organizational structures and party systems of political parties, which are the main actors of political regimes. Afterwards, elections and electoral systems are discussed in relation to both the party system and democracy. In the last part of the course, the development of political parties in Turkey, the Turkish party system and its problems, the Turkish electoral system and its relationship with democracy are discussed. The aim of the course is to make students discuss the issues of political parties and elections in detail and to emphasize the importance of the election-democracy relationship and intra-party democracy. Another aim of the course is to contribute to the easier learning of students by concretizing abstract subjects by giving examples from the world and our country.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Explains the emergence of political parties, political party systems and electoral systems, and establishes a relationship between the electoral system and the party system.
  • Expresses the roles of parties and elections in society, politics and democratization from an interdisciplinary perspective.
  • Explain and evaluate historically political parties, party systems and electoral systems in Turkey.
