Course Objectives The objective of this course is, firstly, to provide main descriptive knowledge about culture, communication and society, and, secondly, to teach explanations and discussions about the culture, communication and society. Hence, to help students to understand and appreciate the culture, communication and society within which they live
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Describe and differentiate mass culture, popular culture and elite culture.
  • Discuss origin, history and current status of popular culture industry.
  • Show changes in the elements of popular culture over time.
  • Discuss the role of various media on popular culture.
Course Content In this course, the concepts of mass culture and popular culture will be examined and analyzed. In this context, the main characteristics of popular culture will be revealed and its differences from the concepts of mass culture and high culture will be revealed. The connections of popular culture with mass communication will also be discussed and readings on popular culture will be made in this course.
