Course Objectives To provide an introduction to The Art of Illustration as a visual communication with applications.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • The Students know and talk about basic illustration culture, aesthetics and relevant theoretical information.
  • The Students know and implement basic illustration methods and techniques
  • The Students, having acquired competency on illustration domain, develop creative solutions.
  • The Students know and implement interdisciplinary approaches.
Course Content Visual communication/illustration of visual expression as a means of practical examination; examples selected from the printed media with the aim of defining the illustration style and personal approach to discussion and analysis; technical and artistic considerations; specified applications within the scope of the project, illustrative language.

Weekly Subjects and Releated Preparation Studies

Week Subjects Preparation
1 What is illustration? Who is an illustrator? What does an illustrator do? Samples from famed illustrators. Implementation domains of illustration. At the end of each course assignment for the next course shall be given with demanded materials so that students shall be able to make research and drawing.
2 How to become a good illustrator? How to create a good work? Pencil drawing methods (elementary stage). Practice assignment on a plant or animal topic is given.
3 Techniques and samples relevant to illustration methods. Colored pencil drawing methods (elementary stage). An assignment is given to redraw the previous week’s pencil drawing method with colored pencils.
4 Implementation via Gouache Paint and Water Color methods An assignment is given to redraw the previous week’s colored pencil drawing method with gouache paint and water color.
5 Illustration via collage technique A different assignment is given.
6 Connection of illustration with advertisement, design and modern arts and relevant samples. Composition (Interpretation). A composition assignment is given to interpret the topic covered in the 3rd and 4th weeks.
7 Midterm
8 With the cooperation of camera, scanner, computer (required menus from different programs) the acquisitions of illustrator during design stage. An assignment is given to reorganize the works prepared on the 3rd, 4th and 5th weeks by employing the technological tools given hereby. Sample scale is demanded.
9 Directed drawing domains like editorial or medical illustrations comprising of Historical re-enactment or mate painting and samples from common techniques. Applied assignment is given.

11 Based on the acquired knowledge the scope of draft final proposals students prepare on graphic design context (topic setting, narration), implementation forms, planning and projecting. Project Subjects: Cultural, mythological and historical (Anatolian Civilizations), Medical, Editorial, Educational Tools.
12 Within the scope of Project sketch drawings, expressing creative ideas. Applied research is continued.
13 Project work Applied research is continued.
14 Project work Applied research is continued.
15 Conclusion, presentation methods and pre-assessment Projects are received.
16 Final Exam
