Course Objectives This course aims to help the students of Faculty of Engineering and Mathematics Department of Faculty of Arts and Science acquire the basic theory and application of a research based technical report including proper style (APA), organization, format, language, argumentation and reasoning skills and produce a well written report at the level of B2* (Independent User) as stated in Common European Framework of Reference.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Differentiate between the elements of an essay and a report,
  • Study on a model report for increasing awareness on content, organization and format of a report,
  • Research and narrow down a topic for writing a report,
  • Research for appropriate sources to be used as evidence for the report,
  • Evaluate the quality of an online source,
  • Practise writing a detailed outline,
  • Practise revising print sources for research in the classroom,
  • Study the writing procedures for the introductory section of the report,
  • Revise the theory and practise of in-text citations and end-of text citations,
  • Complete additional practise in integrating, punctuating, and documenting quotations, paraphrases and summaries,
  • Study the writing procedures for the body section of the report,
  • Study the writing procedures for the conclusion section of the report,
  • Receive feedback from the instructor about each part of your report,
  • Practise preparing an oral presentation,
  • Present the report briefly in front of audience.
Course Content Research-based report writing skills; types of reports and models, the choice of topics, formation of thesis statements, writing paraphrases and summaries, preparation of report outlines, evaluation of print and electronic sources, in-text and end-of-text citation, report presentation in oral and written format.
