Course Objectives The main objective of the course is to acquire knowledge and training of the various language characteristics, concepts, information in field of social sciences, and their implications for translation (in terms of cultural differences, content, word choice, text function, syntactic patterns, information structure, etc.). Objective of the course could be described as such: To familiarize the students with the proprietary use of language in various areas of social sciences and business administration, as well as providing them with a sound knowledge of relevant jargon & terminology. This course treats the art of translation from the dual perspectives of theory and practise. During the course various theoretical issues that have an impact on the choices of translators are dealt with, and much of class time is spent practising various translation strategies and techniques by translating different types of text on social sciences. Translation assignment simulations may also be carried out with a time deadline etc.
Course Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • acquired the skills to analyze the distinctive qualities of social sciences and business administration texts,
  • acquired the skills to employ corresponding translation methods,
  • developed skills by translating a great variety of texts on social sciences,
  • expanded their knowledge of terminology related to the fields of social sciences (such as history, socilology, psychology etc.),
  • developed skills to read, write and translate texts on social sciences in Turkish and English.
Course Content Translating social sciences texts such as sociology, psychology, history, culture, etc; domain-specific terminological study.
